Colossae

Kuh-los´ee

A city in Asia Minor located in the upper Lycus River valley about a hundred and ten miles east of Ephesus, ten miles east of Laodicea, and twelve miles southeast of Hierapolis. A Christian community, perhaps founded by Epaphras (Col 1:7-8), existed here in the mid-first century CE and was the recipient of a Pauline letter. A severe earthquake in 60 or 61 CE appears to have destroyed the city, and Colossae passed into oblivion in later Roman times.
