Susanna and the Elders

Artemisia Gentileschi, Susanna and the Elders, 1610. Oil on canvas, Schönborn Collection, Pommersfelden, Germany. Perhaps influenced by her own experience with sexual abuse, Gentileschi presents a Susanna who is vulnerable and frightened as the elders overshadow her with their lust, power, and influence.

Compare Kathleen Gilje’s valiant 1998 attempt to show the avenging Susanna hidden beneath Gentileschi’s portrait.
