Aphrodisias Ruins

The ruins of Aphrodisias (western Turkey).

Carian marble was extensively quarried from slopes adjacent to Aphrodisias in the Hellenistic and Roman periods, for building facades and sculptures. The sculptors of Aphrodisias, and the marble sculptures they produced, became famous in the Roman world. Although the city has suffered repeated destruction from earthquakes, the quality of the marble in Aphrodisias has resulted in an unusually large number of inscribed items surviving in the city.
