Jesus with Mary and Martha

Gebhard Flatz, Jesus with Mary and Martha, 1865.

Johann Gebhard Flatz was an Austrian painter of the Nazarene movement. The name Nazarene was adopted by a group of early 19th century German Romantic painters who aimed to revive honesty and spirituality in Christian art. Believing real life too banal to portray, they focused on classic Christian stories, using the styles of medieval and renaissance painting. The open window with a landscape view behind the figures and the clarity of the colors are classic conventions.
