Bathsheba

Hans Memling, Bathsheba, 1485. Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart, Germany.

Hans Memling (1430–1494) was a successful German-born painter working out of Flanders in the tradition of early Netherlandish painting. He painted for his wealthy patrons all over Europe and England and his portraits, in particular, were popular in Italy. Bathsheba at Her Bath captures its subject in the typical Gothic German ideal, with an elongated body shape, and shows her in a contemporary scene, stepping out of her sauna into her slippers.
