Alexander the Great

The Alexander Mosaic (detail),c.100 BCE, marble mosaic, National Archaeological Museum, Naples.

The Alexander Mosaic is a late second century floor mosaic from the House of the Faun in Pompeii. It is generally accepted that it is a copy of an earlier Greek painting from the fourth century. Installed in the entryway of a private house, the mosaic displayed the social prestige of the owner in Pompeian society.
