  • Maccabean revolt

    An uprising led by the priest Mattathias against the Hellenizing agenda of Aniotchus IV Epiphanes. It turned into full-scale war with Judah Maccabee taking the reins and paving the way for the Hasmonean dynasty.

  • Manasseh

    (tribe, not king) One of the "Joseph tribes" of the northern kingdom of Israel, the other being Ephraim. All the other tribes are named after the sons of Jacob, but Ephraim and Manasseh, geographically the largest of the tribes, are named after his grandsons, the two sons of Joseph.

  • manifestation

    Visible or tangible form of something ethereal, abstract, or invisible.

  • manuscripts

    Textual documents, usually handwritten.

  • Marcion

    The leader of an early Christian group that came to be considered heretical.

  • Marduk

    A Babylonian deity who becomes the chief god of the Babylonian pantheon, as recounted in the Babylonian creation story Enuma Elish.

  • Mari

    A city along the Euphrates River.

  • Mariology

    The study of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, or the texts and traditions associated with her.

  • Martin Luther

    German cleric usually considered to have formally launched the Protestant Reformation with his list of 95 "theses" itemizing grievances against the Roman Catholic Church, especially its sale of indulgences claimed to absolve individuals' sins.

  • Marxist

    Of or relating to the writings of Karl Marx, a 19th-century German philosopher, historian, and economist who advocated for a radical rethinking of social stratification and monetary policy.
