Any one of a variety of craftsmen and merchants who traveled regularly for work (smiths), as a mode of life (beggars, musicians), or by historical necessities (exiles, slaves). In wartime they disappeared (Judg 5:6), presumably for safety.

Judg 5:6

6“In the days of Shamgar son of Anath,
in the days of Jael, caravans ceased
and travelers kept to the byways.
