Thebez (Thee´biz)

A city near Shechem, part of the sphere of control of Abimelech, the son of Gideon (Judg 9). Like Shechem, Thebez had a migdal, often translated “strong tower,” but better translated “fortress-temple of the Strong One” (i.e., the deity El). Here Abimelech met his death (Judg 9:50-54; remembered in 2Sam 11:21).
