A small bird of the family Hirundinidae. It is not certain that either of the two Hebrew words (deror, sis) translated “swallow” (NRSV) represents the bird we know by that name. Each term appears twice: deror in (Ps 84:3); (Prov 26:2), and sis in (Isa 38:14); (Jer 8:7).

Ps 84:3

3Even the sparrow finds a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O Lord of hosts,
my King and my God.

Prov 26:2

2Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying,
an undeserved curse goes nowhere.

Isa 38:14

14Like a swallow or a crane I clamor,
I moan like a dove.
My eyes are weary with looking upward.
O Lord, I am oppressed; be my security!

Jer 8:7

7Even the stork in the heavens
knows its times;
and the turtledove, swallow, and crane
observe the time of their coming;
but my people do not know
