soothsayer

One who foretells events. The word has a negative connotation in the OT, where soothsayers are classed with sorcerers (Jer 27:9) and are associated with magical practices (Deut 18:10; Deut 18:14) forbidden to Israel (Mic 5:12).

Jer 27:9

9You, therefore, must not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your dreamers, your soothsayers, or your sorcerers, who are saying to you, “You shall not serv ... View more

Deut 18:10

10No one shall be found among you who makes a son or daughter pass through fire, or who practices divination, or is a soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer,

Deut 18:14

14Although these nations that you are about to dispossess do give heed to soothsayers and diviners, as for you, the Lord your God does not permit you to do so.

Mic 5:12

12and I will cut off sorceries from your hand,
and you shall have no more soothsayers;
