Shabbethai

Shabbethai (Shab´uh-thi)

1 A Levite opposed to Ezra’s reform policy of separating from foreign wives (Ezra 10:15). 2 A Levite who helped explain the law (Neh 8:7). 3 A Levite who conducted external business in the Temple of Jerusalem (Neh 11:16). All three definitions may refer to the same person, or 2 and 3 may be identical. The name also appears in (1Esd 9:14, 1Esd 9:48).

Ezra 10:15

15Only Jonathan son of Asahel and Jahzeiah son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levites supported them.
