Paraclete

Paraclete (Pair´uh-kleet)

The transliteration of a Greek term meaning “called to the side of.” Jesus uses this as a designation for the Holy Spirit in the Gospel of (John 14:16-17, John 14:26, John 15:26, John 16:7-11 cf. John 16:13-15). English Bibles translate the term with a variety of words (NRSV, NIV: “Counselor”; KJV: “Comforter”; JB, NEB: “Advocate”), but the word “Paraclete” itself has obtained some use in Christian tradition and liturgy. According to the Fourth Gospel, the Paraclete is the Spirit of truth (John 14:17, John 15:26). The Paraclete continues the work of Jesus himself (John 14:16-17), recalling things the earthly Jesus taught or revealing things he was unable to convey (John 14:26, John 16:12-14). This spiritual knowledge or insight, unavailable until after Jesus’s death and resurrection, makes Christian faith and understanding fully possible.
