Ophir

Ophir (Oh´fuhr)

A people descended from Shem (Gen 10:29; 1Chr 1:23). The land of these people is designated by the same name (1Kgs 9:28; 1Kgs 10:11) and was a famous source of gold (Job 22:24; Job 28:16; Ps 45:9; Isa 13:12).

Gen 10:29

29Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab; all these were the descendants of Joktan.

1Kgs 9:28

28They went to Ophir, and imported from there four hundred twenty talents of gold, which they delivered to King Solomon.

11Moreover, the fleet of Hiram, which carried gold from Ophir, brought from Ophir a great quantity of almug wood and precious stones.

Job 22:24

24if you treat gold like dust,
and gold of Ophir like the stones of the torrent-bed,

Job 28:16

16It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir,
in precious onyx or sapphire.

Ps 45:9

9daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor;
at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir.

Isa 13:12

12I will make mortals more rare than fine gold,
and humans than the gold of Ophir.
