Nahor

Nahor (Nay´hor)

1 A descendant of Shem, and the son of Serug and father of Terah (Gen 11:22-25; 1Chr 1:26; Luke 3:34). 2 The son of Terah and the brother of Abraham (Gen 11:26-27; Josh 24:2) who married Milcah (Gen 11:29). This Nahor, grandson of 1 above, was the parent of twelve sons (equivalent to tribes) by his wife Milcah and a concubine, Reumah (Gen 22:20-24). Of these, the tribes born to Milcah were probably the subsequent Aramean tribes living north and east of Palestine. The tribes born to Reumah were considered less closely tied to Israel and probably lived north of Damascus. It may have been to this territory that Abraham subsequently sent his servant (“to the city of Nahor,” Gen 24:10) to obtain a wife for Isaac. In addition to the marriage of Isaac to Nahor’s granddaughter Rebekah (Gen 14:15; Gen 14:24), the relationship of these tribes is further indicated by their worship of a common God (Gen 31:53). 3 A city (Gen 24:10) located east of the upper reaches of the Balikh River, a northern tributary of the Euphrates. This would put the location in modern southern Turkey or northern Syria, probably south and east of Haran (Gen 29:4-5).
