Nahath

Nahath (Nay´hath; Heb., “descent”)

1 The son of Ruel and grandson of Esau; he was a chieftain of the Edomites (Gen 36:13; Gen 36:17). 2 A Levite of the clan of Kohath and grandson of Elkanah (1Chr 6:26). Some scholars take Elkanah here (v. 26) to be the same as the one listed in the genealogy of Samuel (v. 35) and then equate Nahath with the Toah mentioned there (v. 34), but the verses where Nahath occurs (1Chr 6:22-27) are an abbreviated genealogy that is not at all clear. Such an identification of Nahath with Toah is thus questionable, although possible. 3 A Levite who shared the responsibility of collecting the Temple offering during the reign of Hezekiah (2Chr 31:13).
