Merari

Merari (Mi-rah´ri)

The third son of Levi (Gen 46:11; Exod 6:16; Num 3:17; 1Chr 6:1; 1Chr 6:16; 1Chr 23:6) and through his sons, Mahli and Mushi (Exod 6:19; Num 3:20; 1Chr 6:19; 1Chr 23:21; 1Chr 24:26), the eponymous ancestor of the levitical clan of the Merarites (Num 3:33-37; Num 4:29-33; 1Chr 6:29; 1Chr 6:44). The cities and territories allocated to the Merarites appear in (Josh 21:7, Josh 21:34-40 and 1Chr 6:77-81. Prominent Merarites included Asaiah, who supervised the 220 Merarites that David selected to help bring the Ark to Jerusalem (1Chr 15:6); Ethan, who was appointed as a musician for the occasion (1Chr 15:17; 1Chr 15:19); Kish and Azariah, who assisted in Hezekiah’s reform (2Chr 29:12); Jahath and Obadiah, who helped supervise Josiah’s repair of the Temple (2Chr 34:12); and Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and Jeshaiah, who led Merarite contingents in the time of Ezra (Ezra 8:18-19). Merarites also served as gatekeepers for the Temple (1Chr 26:10; 1Chr 26:19).
