Makkedah (Muh-kee´duh)

One of sixteen cities in the Shephelah (an area southwest of Jerusalem) assigned to the tribe of Judah (Josh 15:41). Mentioned alongside Azekah (about twelve miles west of Jerusalem) as the end of Joshua’s rout of the five kings attacking Gibeon, Makkedah is the place where those kings were found hiding in a cave and then slain. Joshua subsequently took the city of Makkedah and killed its king (Josh 10:16-28).
