Joash (Joh´ash)

Also Jehoash. 1 The youngest son of Ahaziah, king of Judah (835–796[8?] BCE). After Ahaziah’s death, his mother, Athaliah, had all his children killed. However, Joash, an infant, was saved and kept hidden in the Temple for six years (2Kgs 11:3; 2Chr 22:11-12). The priest Jehoiada anointed him king and had Athaliah slain (2Chr 23:1-15). 2 The son of Jehoahaz and king of Israel (801–785 BCE). During his reign, Israel regained captured cities (2Kgs 13:25). 3 An Abiezrite, the father of Gideon the judge, who defended his son’s destruction of the Baal altar (Judg 6:11; Judg 6:29-31). 4 The son of Ahab, king of Israel, in whose co-custody the prophet Micaiah’s imprisonment was entrusted (1Kgs 22:26). 5 A son of Shelah, the son of Judah (1Chr 4:21-22). 6 The brother of Ahiezer and son of Shemaah of Gibeah; one of the “mighty warriors” who came to David at Ziklag (1Chr 12:1-3).
