hypocrisy

A term generally denoting a pretense that, in the NT, is also associated with self-righteousness, breach of “contract,” or wickedness in general. The best-known passage in the NT describing hypocrisy is (Matt 23), where self-righteousness and pretense are both in evidence (Matt 6:2; Matt 6:5; Matt 6:16; Matt 7:5; Matt 15:7; Matt 22:18; Matt 24:51; Mark 7:6; Luke 6:42; Luke 12:56; Luke 13:15).
