An antelope-like creature. Three species lived in Palestine: the Dorcas gazelle in the deserts, the mountain gazelle in the hillier areas, and the goitred gazelle east of the Jordan. They were symbols of love and beauty for the Hebrews (Song 2:9 Song 2:17
). They were also a major game animal, regularly supplied at Solomon’s table (1Kgs 4:23
), though they were difficult to catch because of their swiftness (2Sam 2:18
; 1Chr 12:8
