eternal life

eternal life

A life uninterrupted by death. In ancient Israel there was no belief in a life after death. The idea of an afterlife or eternal life came late in postexilic times; Dan 12:1-2 is thought to be the first biblical reference to an afterlife (ca. 175 BCE). But afterlife and eternal life become an essential part of Christian preaching in virtue of Jesus’s resurrection from the dead. In Christian preaching, furthermore, Jesus is said to offer his followers eternal life, not just in the future, but now (John 5:24). This is balanced, however, with other statements that say Jesus will raise people to eternal life “on the last day” (John 6:40; John 11:25).
