Edomites

Edomites (Ee´duh-mits)

The inhabitants of the land of Edom (Seir). The Edomite “kings” of Gen. 36:31–39 were probably tribal chiefs, local rulers controlling separate and independent regions. The Edomites refused permission to the group led by Moses to pass through their territory (Num 20:14-21). Saul fought successfully with the Edomites (1Sam 14:47). Doeg, an Edomite, appears among Saul’s servants (1Sam 21:7; 1Sam 22:9; 1Sam 22:18; 1Sam 22:22). David conquered the Edomites (2Sam 8:12-14). Solomon appears to have had access to the port of Ezion-geber in the land of Edom (1Kgs 9:26). Pharaoh Shishak’s invasion (1Kgs 14:25; 2Chr 12:2-9) possibly gave the Edomites a chance to regain their independence. In the time of Jehoshaphat (ca. 874–850 BC), Judah expanded southward, ruled Edom (1Kgs 22:47), and used the port of Ezion-geber (1Kgs 22:48-49; 2Chr 20:35-37). The Edomites successfully revolted when Jehoram was king of Judah (ca. 850–843 BCE), set up a king of their own (2Kgs 8:20-22), and maintained their independence for about fifty or sixty years until the middle of Amaziah’s reign (ca. 800–785 BCE). Amaziah’s son, Uzziah (Azariah), recaptured Edom and built Elath (2Kgs 14:22; 2Chr 26:1-2). At the time of Ahaz (ca. 742–725 BCE), the Edomites defeated Judah (2Chr 28:17) and recovered Elath (2Kgs 16:6). From this time onward, Judah was not able to exercise control over them.
