Debir

Debir (Dee´buhr; Heb., “back part”?)

1 A king of Eglon who joined the Amorite confederation trying to stop Joshua (Josh 10:3). 2 Part of the north border of Judah (Josh 15:7), probably Thoghret ed-Debr, “pass of Debir,” ten miles east of Jerusalem and about eight miles southwest of Jericho. 3 A city of Gad (Josh 13:26), probably modern Umm el-Dabar, about twelve miles north of Pella. It may be the same as “Lo-debar” (Amos 6:13; 2Sam 9:4-13; 2Sam 17:27), a refuge for Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth, and later a source of assistance for David. 4 A Canaanite city in Judah about eleven miles southwest of Hebron (Josh 10:36-39; Josh 12:13). Inhabited by Anakim (Josh 11:21), it was assaulted by Joshua or by Calebites (Josh 15:15-17; Judg 1:11-15) or by both, and became an administrative district headquarters (Josh 15:49). It was assigned as a levitical city (Josh 21:15; 1Chr 6:58) and is twice mentioned as having an earlier name: Kiriath-sepher, Heb., “city of the scribe” (Josh 15:15; Judg 1:11); Kiriath-sannah (Josh 15:49) is a probable misspelling of that name.
