council

The English translation given in some contexts to the Greek word synedrion. The Gospels occasionally refer to local councils that render justice (Matt 5:22) or persecute Christians (Matt 10:17; Mark 13:9). Paul speaks of a council of elders (Acts 22:5); most other references are to the Sanhedrin of chief priests and leaders in Jerusalem. See also Sanhedrin.
