Any of a number of products used to dress the hair or beautify the skin. The most common cosmetics were kohl, henna, rouge, powder, ointments, and perfumes. Kohl was used to line the eyes in black; in Israel, women who “painted their eyes” were not held in high regard (2Kgs 9:30; Jer 4:30; Ezek 23:40). Henna was used for dying the hair and also for painting the toenails and fingernails.
