Cherethites (Kair´uh-thits)

A people, probably Cretans, who lived in the area to the southeast of Philistia (“the Negeb of the Cherethites,” (1Sam 30:14). As mercenaries, they constituted a section of David’s personal army under the leadership of Benaiah, son of Jehoiada (2Sam 8:18; 2Sam 20:23).

1Sam 30:14

14We had made a raid on the Negeb of the Cherethites and on that which belongs to Judah and on the Negeb of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag down.”

2Sam 8:18

18Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David's sons were priests.

2Sam 20:23

23Now Joab was in command of all the army of Israel; Benaiah son of Jehoiada was in command of the Cherethites and the Pelethites;
