A natural opening in a hillside. Caves were used as places of domestic dwelling (Gen 19:30; Num 24:21; Song 2:14, Jer 49:16; Obad 1:3) and temporary refuge (Judg 6:2; 1Sam 13:6; 1Sam 22:1). They were also used as tombs (Gen 23:17-18; Gen 49:29; John 11:38).
