Beth-horon

Beth-horon (Beth-hor´uhn; Heb., “house of Horon [a deity]”)

A city of refuge assigned to the levitical family of Kohath (Josh 21:22; 1Chr 6:68), one of twin cities in Ephraim (Josh 16:3; Josh 16:5; 1Chr 7:24) near the border of Benjamin (Josh 18:13; Josh 18:14). Joshua chased the Amorite kings from Gibeon “by way of the ascent of Beth-horon” (Josh 10:10-11); the city was attacked by Philistine raiders (1Sam 13:18) and by Amaziah’s northern mercenaries (2Chr 25:13); Solomon fortified it (1Kgs 9:17; 2Chr 8:5), but the pharaoh Shishak captured it in ca. 925 BCE.
