Ashtaroth (Ash´tuh-roth)

The capital city of Og, king of Bashan, whom Moses defeated in battle (Deut 1:4; Josh 9:10; Josh 12:4). It is later mentioned as a city of refuge given to the Gershomites, a levitical group, from the territory of the half-tribe of Manasseh (1Chr 6:71). It was located to the east of the Sea of Galilee.

Deut 1:4

4This was after he had defeated King Sihon of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, and King Og of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei.

Josh 9:10

10and of all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, King Sihon of Heshbon, and King Og of Bashan who lived in Ashtaroth.

Josh 12:4

4and King Og of Bashan, one of the last of the Rephaim, who lived at Ashtaroth and at Edrei

71To the Gershomites: out of the half-tribe of Manasseh: Golan in Bashan with its pasture lands and Ashtaroth with its pasture lands;
