Abishai (Uh-bi´shi)

The son of Zeruiah, David’s sister, and the brother of Joab and Asahel (1Chr 2:16). Numerous exploits earned him a reputation as a belligerent warrior and defender of David (1Sam 26:6-9; 2Sam 16:9-11; 2Sam 21:17; 1Chr 18:12). He may be best known for the story in which he avenged the death of his brother Asahel by murdering Abner in Hebron (2Sam 2:12-28; 2Sam 3:26-30).
